Symbolism of the Chariot Tarot:
Forward Movement, Victory, Success

A charioteer harnesses the powers of polarity, the light and dark sphinxes, symbolizing the powers of mind to move forward and gain victory in the material plain. He is armored with the crescent moons of the High Priestess and wears the eight pointed Star of Healing on his crown. The canopy of his chariot is the diadem of the starry heavens. In his right hand he holds the wand turned spear to symbolize the material force which he represents. This is a card of success and triumph over material difficulties.

Symbolism of Death Tarot:
Conclusion, Transition, Finishing up, Regeneration, Elimination of Old Patterns

The mysterious rider carries no weapon. Rather, he holds in his hand the banner of life, the mystic rose. At his feet lies the dead king while other human figures are shown dying. Behind and beyond the sun rises between the two pillars of duality signifying eternal life. This pendant signifies fundamental change, transformation and the triumph of the spirit.

Symbolism of The Devil Tarot:
Power, Ambition,Temptation, Addiction

A goat-headed, batwinged figue with an inverted pentacle atop his forehead strides outward, one hand raised in blessing, the other lowered and holding and inverted torch. Chained to the pedistal on which he sits are a male and female couple with the animal features of horns and tails. The chains are those of material life. The horns and tail of the couple represent man's animal nature. The card signifies extraordinary energy bound by dualism and materialism. This card is the opposite of The Lovers.

Symbolism of the Empress Tarot Pendant:
Growth, Health and Love of Nature

The Mother Goddess sits on an earthly throne, the orbed sceptre in her hand showing her imperial power. She wears a robe embroidered with roses, another symbol of earth, but her crown is of stars, showing that her power is divine in origin. The throne itself is supported by the heart with the symbol of Venus within; her rule is one of love, receptiveness and fertility. Her province is the original garden where the waters of life flow in abundance. She is Mother Nature. Here the goddess shown in the High Priestess card has descended into the world and form in order to guide and assist humanity on the journey home. Spiritual growth, physical health and love of nature are her main avenues toward enlightenment.

Symbolism of The Fool Tarot Card: Innocence, Transformation, Faith

A young man holding the white rose of innocence in his left hand and grasping a vagabond staff and satchel in the other, wanders with his gaze to the heavens, about to step into an abyss. His is the transformative journey of the spirit from innocence through experience into wisdom.

His guardian and friend is the white dog symbolizing his own puppylike trust and faith, for which the world labels him The Fool.

The tarot reminds us that sometimes it's appropriate to be as trusting as the Fool.

Symbolism of the Hanged Man Tarot:
  Inner Vision, Enlightenment, Sacrifice, Loss

The Hanged Man is suspended between worlds, between heaven and earth. He is attached to the tree, representing his connection to nature. His head is surrounded by a gold aura, symbolizing the light of wisdom, inner vision and enlightenment. The Tau cross here is an image of sacrifice. He had surrendered the world as he has seen it and now has an entirely new vision. The card may represent a time of suspension and sacrifice or loss but it is strongly coupled with the possibility of the attainment of the jewel of higher wisdom.
The Hanged Man is often associated with Odin, the primary god of the Norse Pantheon. Odin hung upside down from the world-tree, Yggdrasil, for nine days in order to gain knowledge of the runes, which the Norse cosmology regarded as the source and end of all mystery and all knowledge. The moment he glimpsed the runes, he died, but the knowledge of them was so powerful that he immediately returned to life. This interpretation highlights the necessity of undertaking acts of personal sacrifice in order to achieve one's own higher spiritual good.

Symbolism of the Hermit Tarot:
Introspection-Silence-Guidance-Reflection

An ancient and hooded figure carrying a staff in one hand and a lit lantern in the other. He stands at the pinnacle of a mountain holding forth a shining lantern. In its original significance he may be said to be one of attainment, the summation of the path and the ability to now shed light for others. There are two major ways this pendant can be interpreted. First: the need to withdraw from society to become comfortable with himself. Second: the need to come out of isolation to share his knowledge with others.

Symbolism of The Hierophant Tarot:
Down to Earth Wisdom

Taurus the Earthly bull may seem an odd sign for a holy man, but it makes sense if you understand that the Heirophant's purpose is to bring the spiritual down to Earth. Where the High Priestess between her two pillars deals with realms beyond this Earth, the Hierophant (or High Priest) deals with worldly problems. He is well suited to do this because, like all Taureans, he strives to create harmony and peace in the midst of a crisis. The Hierophant's only problem is that, like the Bull, he can be stubborn and hidebound. At his best, he is wise and soothing, at his worst, he is an unbending traditionalist.

The Hierophant represents an old, favored teacher, therapist, counselor, advisor, or sponsor. That young Priest with progressive ideas, or the old Rabbi who was always so down to Earth and fun, or maybe an uncle who always offered such common sense advise.

Symbolism of the High Priestess Tarot:

Change, Power, Creativity

A young woman sits on a throne holding a scroll labeled "Tora" meaning "law." On her breast is the sign of the meeting of heaven and earth, the Maltese cross. Her crown is the full orb supported by horns, the crown of the Mother Goddess Isis, who rules all things changeable, shown by the moon at her feet.

Her power, upon which her throne rests, derives from the creative principle of duality, shown by the two pillars of light and darkness.

To those who know and love her, she dispenses the sweet fruit of the world itself, symbolized by the pomegranates.

Symbolism of the Justice Tarot:
Impartiality, Distance, Justice,Choice Leading to Transformation

A royal figure is seated between two pillars, a sword in the right hand and the scales of justice in the left. This pendant is representative of the law of karma or "as ye sow, so shall ye reap." The card signifies a position of choice ( the scales) along with the ability to cut away to the truth of a situation (the sword). The pillars here lead into one world and those of the High Priestess into another.

The Goddess Athena called an end to the cycle of vengeance and empanelled the first jury. Justice is about mediating the various claims of right, of morality, of duty. In a world of scarcity, not everything claimed can be acquired. Justice, in theory, sets forth a system to judge between the claims. Maąt was a goddess of justice in Egypt. She ties Judgement with Justice, as she helped judge the souls of the dead.

Symbolism of the Magician Tarot Card:
Eternity, 4 Elements, Heaven & Earth

A young man raises a doubly terminated wand in his right hand. The wand is held vertically, a tool for the unification of heaven and earth. His left index finger grounds this duality into creation drawing from the original chaos to bring into being the flowers of creation.

His aura is shown as the horizontal figure eight, symbol of eternity, while about his waist is wrapped the serpent-cinture, the serpent devouring its own tail, another symbol of eternity.

In front of him are the creator/magicians tools: wands, cups, swords and pentacles. These symbolize the four elements of fire, water, air and earth.

Symbolism of The Moon Tarot:
Intuition, Dreams, Visions

The Moon, with her borrowed light, looks down on the nocturnal world. The path of the spirit winds between the two towers of duality, of good and evil, light and darkness. A dog and a wolf, enslaved to the terror of darkness and ignorance, howl with fear. A crayfish climbs out of the water to begin the path of the spirit. Thus the spirit must overcome the terrors of darkness and ignorance to find its way to the mountain of knowledge and enlightenment.

With Pisces as its ruling sign, the Moon is all about visions and illusions, madness, genius and poetry. This is a card that has to do with sleep, and so with both dreams and nightmares. It warns that there might be hidden enemies, tricks and falsehoods, but it also brings the message of great creativity, of powerful magic, primal feelings and intuition. This time can result in great creativity, psychic powers, visions and insight. Its message is to trust your intuition.

Symbolism of the Lovers Tarot:
Union, Love, Fertility, Mystery

An angel holds out her hands in blessing upon a man and a woman, Adam and Eve, the primal couple, the original mother and father. Behind Eve is the serpent in the tree of knowledge and behind Adam is the tree of life. Between the lovers are the clouds of unknowing, holding fertility and mystery. At their feet runs the path of life, ascending to the mountain of knowledge. All is illumined by the great sun of Oneness. This is above all the card of Human Love.

Symbolism of The Star Tarot:
Clarity of Vision and Spiritual Insight

The Star is a card that looks to the future. It predict hope, healing, and unexpected help enroute, with a guiding light to the future. The Star is one of those cards everyone loves. Usually the most beautiful card in a tarot deck, it suggests the peace and harmony of its meaning. There is nothing negative about this card, but whatever hope and healing future it offers, it might not be immediate. This is a soft card whose vision is for tomorrow. It is a pendant that predicts unexpected help as a first step on the road toward healing.
The Star stands for Truth. Truth as a naked woman, eternally young and beautiful, pours forth the waters of spiritual blessing and healing upon the flowering earth. All is illumined by the great eight pointed star and the seven lesser stars symbolizing the divine radiance of enlightenment. The bird in the background sings the song of happiness in divine union.

Symbolism of the Strength Tarot: Mastery, Creation, Infinity

A mature woman, the female principle, cradles the head of a lion in her hands. Crowning her head and adorning her white garment are the flowers and leaves of nature. Above her head is the symbol of continual creation and infinity. The lion is the power of the king, of sexual fertility and drive and animal strength. She controls the lion through love, thereby nurturing all of nature, shown by the forest and mountains of the eternal garden which surrounds them. This is the card of easy mastery over the problems of material life through the power of love.

Symbolism of The Sun Tarot:
Clarity, Energy, Gain, Triumph, Pleasure, New Birth (Child, Business Etc.)

This is the light that comes after the long dark night, Apollo to the Moon's Diana. A positive card, it promises a day in the sun. Glory, gain, triumph, pleasure, truth, success. As the moon symbolized inspiration from the unconscious, from dreams, this card symbolizes discoveries made fully consciousness and wide awake. This is science and math, beautifully constructed music, carefully reasoned philosophy. It is a card of intellect, clarity of mind, and feelings of youthful energy. The arrival of a child in this pendant can be taken literally if other cards in the spread seem to suggest it. A wanted and most welcome babe may soon be on the way. Alternately, the birth of a business, publishing of a book, or complete transformation of self.

Symbolism of the Temperance Tarot:
Temperance, Harmony, Balance, Health

An angel of light, with the sign of the sun on his forehead, stands with one foot on earth and one in water, pouring water between two cups. The waters are the waters of life. The angel's work is the balancing and harmonizing of the elements. The Iris blossoms and the rising sun-crown symbolize the enlightenment toward which winds the path of the spirit. In addition to its literal meaning of temperance or moderation, the Temperance pendant is often interpreted as symbolizing the blending or synthesis of opposites.

Symbolism of The Tower Tarot:
Removal of Obstacles

A tower, built upon a solid rock foundation, is struck by lightening and begins to crumble. The crown of heaven is falling and, removed from its proteection, both kind and queen are tumbling to their doom. The picture is one of removal and cleansing of that which has been constricted. The pendant can symbolize the destruction of ego but may also show physical desplacements. The positive aspect is that the bedrock remains, revealing the possibility of seeing ultimate reality freed of artificial constructs. When the Querent gets this card, they can expect to be shaken up, to be blinded by a shocking revelation. It sometimes takes that to see a truth that one refuses to see. Or to bring down beliefs that are so well constructed. What's most important to remember is that the tearing down of this structure, however painful, makes room for something new to be built.

Symbolism of the Wheel of Fortune Tarot:
Turning Point, Opportunities, Possibilities

In the midst of sky and clouds is the disk of Tarot with the letters of the Divine Name placed between. The disk is in movement signifying constant change and transformation. The sphinx atop the wheel holds the sword of discernment and represents balance in the midst of unending fluidity.

The Wheel of Fortune shows a wheel floating in the sky inscribed with the letters TARO and alchemical symbols representing the elements underlying the four suits of the tarot, Fire (Wands), Water (Cups), Earth (Discs) and Air (Swords). This recalls the emblems of the four suits of the tarot actually laying on the table of The Magician. Changes in station. Rich become poor, poor become rich. Sudden reversal of fortune. Strong Buddhist associations with the Karmic cycle.
Winged creatures are in the four corners of the card, a man, an eagle, a bull, and a lion, each with an open book. Depending on the tradition, they represent the four seasons, the four gospels, the four fixed signs of the zodiac, and the four angels of the apocalypse.

Symbolism of The World Tarot:
Successful conclusion, Well-earned praise, Celebration and Success

The World card pictures a dancer in a Yoni (sometimes made of laurel leaves), symbolizing the great Mother, the cervix through which everything is born, and also the doorway to the next life after death. It is indicative of a complete circle. The Dancer has one leg crossed over the other, just like the Hanged man. She is, in a sense, his opposite, the hanged man right-side-up. As the Hanged Man saw infinitely inward, the Dancer sees infinitely outward. Which brings us to the Lion, Bull, Cherub and Eagle standing for Leo, Taurus, Aquarius and Scorpio, the fixed signs of the Zodiac (these link the ever turning World card to the ever turning Wheel of Fortune), and so symbolic of the four elements, four compass points and the four corners of the universe. All within the Dancer's sight and power.

The World card represents a successful conclusion, all aspects accounted for and taken in. The end to a long-term project is in sight, and that it will be accompanied by well-earned praise, celebration and success. The World card indicates travel, maybe a lecture tour, book signing, or just a trip around the world. This is a wonderful card of wholeness, perfection, satisfaction and happiness.

The Tarot is a system of both divination (foretelling the future or the circumstances of the present or past) and philosophy. It is said that after the burning of the great library at Alexandria, the scholars, mystics and philosophers created the system of Tarot so that the ancient wisdom could always be received. Tarot images represent the great archetypes in a manner that makes them open to understanding.
